Day 17- Stranger at the Door

This story is a real experience back in 2015 when my home was being renovated. From electrical lines to extending the hall and kitchen, changing the tiles and what not. With the kind of work involved, there was dust everywhere, we had to lock ourselves inside. Most of the work was completed and only the electrical work was pending. Let me tell you something about my tenants who turned more than family before I go in to the story. They came as tenants to our house and before we both knew we were cooking for each other. Sharing each and every moment of life and celebrating it. We were there to look out for each other and supported each other like we were blood relation. The relation is too deep even to just put it here. Maybe some other day I will talk about it more. They came, they saw, they conquered. Yes they conquered our hearts in a very short span of time.

So back to the story now, we all finished our dinner and went back to sleep. I was fast asleep and at some point of time I could hear footsteps in my home. I woke up and got out of my room to see my dad, mom and sister awake. They were all asking each other who it could be at this point of time. I was half-awake and fully confused to realize what were they talking about. Then I heard the bell ring, soon I was fully aware of what was happening. I looked at the clock it was 1:30 am around and it made no sense at that time for someone to ring our bell. And then my dad spoke, “Let me go down and check” Mom was quick to respond, “No, no you check from the window and see who it is?” And my sister added, “Who is it at this time?” she kept wondering while dad made slow movements to the window and peeked out and he could not see anyone. The road was wet with the rain that came a few hours back and it was still drizzling.

My mom started again, “It might be a robber, since we are renovating the house” to which dad responded, “Why will the robber come and ring the bell, you be quiet you do not know anything” We were all still confused and searching for the ultimate answer and then it rang again. I knew I could not talk to Dad since he was in mission control mode. So I asked my mom, “Who can it be, they are simply ringing the bell?” To which mom replied, “They have been ringing the bell every 15 mins once, don’t know. Let’s see wait.” Dad went down the stairs holding a stick in his hand towards the front door, “Hey who’s that, talk now.” There was no response from the other side of the door, he was scared, confused and doubtful too. I was slowly getting down the stairs and I could hear the murmur from my mom and sister from behind. Soon we came back and decided to wake up our tenants below our home. I texted on WhatsApp but my Dad was faster and smarter than me to call them on phone call and wake them up. He told them the situation and asked them to check if they saw anything from their window. They called back in a few minutes and told us that there was nobody responding nor anyone to be seen.

It was decided that we will all attack immediately after we open the door and give this anonymous stranger at the door a thrashing. We readied our tools, mine was a small replica of a hockey stick that my sister in Singapore had gifted me. Mom held her cooking utensils and I don’t recall what my sister had in her hand. Soon we all opened the door together, and saw something that I have never seen nor any of us in our entire life. The 6 of us stood there looking at emptiness. There was nobody there, everyone got busy scratching our head and then we heard the bell ring again and as we turned towards the bell switch at the door, we saw the water from the rain had been pouring slowly from the roof and into the bell switch which was due for repair. The result had caused a short-circuit and has been causing the reason for our trouble all night. We all had a hearty laugh seeing it and we were proud of our daring attempt to a near miss capture of a robber. I saw the time on my phone it was around 2:30 am and we all decided to continue the conversation the next day. As I sneaked into the bed nicely tucked, I heard the bell ring once more.
