Day 15 - Zoom
Days and weeks passed so quick and yet we do not realize the full extent of how we are spending our time. If there was time keeper for all of us out there he / she would have definitely told us how we were spending it meaninglessly. While some went to play cards with their family, others got into the habit fo cleaning their room and their home. There were others who got into fitness, cooking, gardening and then there was the Dalgona coffee too. Everyone are trying to get themselves engaged one way or the other. Some of my friends even enrolled themselves as volunteers to help during this crisis.
Of all the interesting things people are trying to do, one highlight was the application called Zoom. Its a video conference application which allows users to create a meeting virtually. It’s similar to WhatsApp video call, only difference is the number of people you can add. While WhatsApp can add 4 users at the max, Zoom does not have kind of restriction to add users to the call but the only drawback is the limited time it has.
I have personally used this app to create meetings with my clients, read play scripts, read poetry and also to have my film club discussions. I would like to tell you one such funny incident that happened today at my home. It’s my mom’s story this time and her singing group had come up with the idea of video conferencing using this application. So I set-up a table in the hall, placed her a chair, got the earphones and made sure she was facing the camera properly. It reminded me of my earlier job interview through Skype call. So back to the story now. She was ready and when the clock showed 2 minutes to the session, she clicked on the link. Soon my mom saw three of them in the call, she greeted and got response from them. She removed her earphones and told me “How to quit?” I replied, “Why?” She told me no one joined yet, so they are creating a new one. I told mom you were all supposed to wait for others to join. Please tell them the same when you join again and do not exit. She understood and rejoined with a new link, she explained them the same.
Now the session was mid-way and I could hear my mom scream, “Yes Mam, understood” Me and Dad got confused, we started whispering “They can hear her, yet she is talking in a loud voice” “Yes, Dad I know right” and then I made hand signals and told my mom to lower her voice. She removed her earphones again and told me “Hey, they can’t hear me” After few loud singing and even louder responses the session got over and my mom was re-arranging everything. I asked her how was the session and she told me we need to practice more. I wondered if it was the singing or using the application. It was later in the evening that I realized that the others on the call had not increased the volume on their phone and that’s why they could not hear my mom. I laughed and called it a good day.
